Who We are

The purpose of the Green Caucus is to educate, coordinate and advocate across Conventions for policies that raise awareness, visibility, and advance support for creation care work at all levels of the church. 

Our vision is to shape and equip the Episcopal Church to embody and deliver creation justice. 

 This caucus serves as a platform for advancing actions that elevate awareness and support for climate and environmental  justice within and beyond the church. We do this by engaging with key individuals and with Interim Bodies, Provinces, and Dioceses, as they carry out the directives of General Convention.  

We invite all interested clergy, lay, and youth leaders from every Province to join in prioritizing environmental stewardship as a core aspect of justice work.

Episcopal Green Caucus Code of Conduct

The Green Caucus was formed because environmental topics that come before General Convention need strong voices to ensure we respect the dignity of God’s good creation. We believe environmental stewardship and creation care are justice work and our sacred duty. Our voice was strong and recognized at GC 81 in 2024.

Our vision is that the General Convention prioritizes care of creation such that there are structures and processes to provide guidance and funding to church-wide, dioceses, congregations, and individuals to restore the health of the climate and our environment, and to minister to those most affected by the climate crisis. 

These guidelines are based on the values we wish to foster in our leaders and members.

1. Active and respectful listening and responding. Absorb, then respond flexibly and with open questions to the creativity, curiosity, and research of others. Learn to respond to others with honest, open questions instead of counsel, corrections, etc. 

2. Respectful speech. Speak your truth, using “I” statements, in ways that respect other people’s truth. Speak respectfully about others. Our views of reality may differ, but speaking one’s truth does not mean interpreting, correcting, or debating what others say. 

3. Be present as fully as possible. Be here with your doubts, fears, and failings as well as your convictions, joys, and successes ...your listening as well as your speaking.

4. Come to meetings fully prepared. Communicate clearly and with respect for time.   Invest time and substantive effort into the group's goals. 

5. Submit agenda items to the Planning Team (Emily), in advance of the meeting. Defer to leadership direction. We need a leader, so let's show gratitude for that requisite extra effort. 

6. Observe confidentiality in all communications, including printed, spoken, electronic, and personal statements by others. Do not share information in or links to the shared drive, except within the caucus; this is for internal caucus use only. This includes sharing links to recorded meetings, which are intended for caucus participants who cannot attend a meeting.

7. Relationship. We value our relationships with others in our diverse group, and we work together for the greater good of all creation.
